The 5th Chair of the Academic Committee, Christopher Lim OC VC, has taken the personal decision to temporarily step aside as Secretary for Old Carthusians, a member of the Business Council, in order to pursue further education and career ventures.

The Business Council has accepted the decision by Christopher Lim OC VC to step down as Secretary for OC Affairs and an MBC . While Secretary Lim was no longer a student, he made the decision to continue preparing the Academic Committee for the future, and we thank him for his efforts. From May onwards, Secretary Lim made it clear to Academic Committee members that he will be standing aside as Chair on 2 July and the elected Secretary-General will be officially made Chair then. However, he still sought to contribute in any way he could and the Business Council elected him Secretary for Alumni Relations (OC Affairs Secretary), where he built up our alumni relations communications infrastructure and continued to Chair the Future Development Agenda 2021 Commission.

As Secretary Lim steps aside — albeit temporarily — from the committee service, we reflect on the legacy of the 5th Chairmanship of the Academic Committee and how it shaped our agenda and trajectory going forward. The longest tenure in Committee history resulted in the most radical reforms, from Liaison House, this department, to the Business Council and, most importantly, the Network Summit, the Academic Committee has become more active, more engaged, and a bigger part of school life.

Let us fulfil our goals of embodying and emboldening Charterhouse Values and make Academic work.

During his time as a Carthusian and a full-time Member of the Academic Committee, he served as:

  • Chairman of the Academic Committee
  • Secretary-in-Charge, Founder and Organiser of the Network Summit 2021, our 5-day flagship event on Higher Education and Careers, with Chair Lim moderating them. Christopher Lim also led the debrief and evaluation process, looking to see how our Committee could expand our careers offering post-Summit.
  • Leader of the Alliance Group in the Pupil Affairs Review Commission (PARC). Christopher Lim led the Alliance of Academic-I.T. Committees in the School Council-wide PARC where he advocated for the interests of both Academic and IT Affairs. He was elected by Members of the Academic and I.T. Committees. In his role as Academic Committee Chair, he also conceived of the PARC organisation and greater interaction between Committees at school.
  • Chair and Founder, Town Hall Organising Sub-Committee, to establish closer on-the ground relationships with members of our school community.
  • Chair and Founder, Second Year Specialists’ (2YS) Steering Group, to implement recommendations and advice from members of our school’s Upper-Sixth Form on their learning and A-Level experience, so we can streamline and improve the experience for all Carthusians.
  • Chair and Founder, Future Development Agenda 2021 Commission, to look to the future and see where our Committee needs to be in enhancing our community’s learning experience, working closer with our School, and widening our reach.
  • Vice-Chair (VC) for Alumni Relations
  • VC for Community
  • Secretary for Development
  • Secretary for the Environment
  • Secretary for Alumni Relations
  • Member of the Business Council
  • Secretary for Cloisters Agreement Negotiations
  • Deputy Chair of the Academic Committee

The Academic Committee also helped create the Information Technology (I.T.) Committee, which it would later form a joint alliance with in PARC. In this capacity, Christopher Lim served as:

  • First Secretary of the I.T. Committee, concurrently during his tenure as AComm Chair, so as to advocate for greater adoption of technology in academic work at Charterhouse and enhance the digital transition in learning.
  • Chair of the I.T. Committee. As the 1st Chair, Chair Lim developed the infrastructure for the Committee to become a full member of the Charterhouse School Pupil Council.
